Apartment preparedness is not about filling a small home with crates. It is about understanding the building systems you depend on and using storage well.
Start with the building
Ask the strata manager, building manager or landlord how emergency information is communicated.
Know the fire stairs and exits. Do not assume lifts will work during a power failure or fire alarm. Understand how security doors, garage doors and intercoms behave without mains power.
Never use a lift during a fire evacuation. Follow building instructions and emergency services.
Water without a garage
Water is usually the hardest storage problem.
Get Ready Queensland currently uses 10 litres of drinking water per person as a minimum for three days. Other authorities and risks may require more.
Our practical suggestionDivide the reserve into containers that are manageable to lift. Use the back of a lower cupboard, a stable shelf or another cool, protected location. Do not store heavy water where a shelf is not rated for the load.
Rotate it using the container or authority guidance.
One useful box
Emergency Victoria suggests putting items in one accessible place. In an apartment, one box can carry much of the non-food layer:
- torches and spare batteries
- charged power banks and cables
- radio
- first-aid kit
- copies of important documents
- contact list
- hygiene basics
- manual can opener
- pet leads, records and collapsible bowls
Food can stay in the normal pantry if it is easy to identify and rotate.
Plan for a longer walk
If lifts stop, can every household member use the stairs safely? If not, speak with the building and relevant support providers before an emergency. Do not design an improvised assisted-evacuation method from internet tips.
Keep essential mobility and support items accessible. Plan how children, bags and animals would move together.
Power and information
Apartment mobile reception and internet can change during an outage. Keep a charged power bank, but also have another route to official information, such as a battery-powered radio.
Write down building management, electricity network and emergency contacts. A number stored only in a flat phone is not a backup.
Pets in shared buildings
Plan a carrier or secure lead for every animal. Keep food, water, medication, records and cleanup supplies accessible.
Get Ready Queensland notes that evacuation arrangements may not accept pets except assistance animals. Identify realistic alternatives before a warning.
Avoid unsafe shortcuts
Do not use barbecues, camping stoves, generators or other fuel-burning equipment inside an apartment, on an enclosed balcony or in another unsafe space. Follow product directions, building rules and fire-service guidance.
Preparedness in an apartment is mainly good logistics: compact storage, known exits, working lights, manageable water and fewer decisions under pressure.
